I hear this all the time: “I have bad posture, but…”

But I try to hold my shoulders back

But I try to stand up straight

But I tighten my abs when I think about it

Have you heard this advice, too?

It's what I heard every day as a child, along with, "Stop slouching."

And I’ve found that this is just the worst advice ever.

Holding your shoulders back does nothing good—Nothing!

Your arms should hang freely when you stand still, not be locked in place.

If you hold your shoulders back, you lock your arms and stop them from hanging freely.

Think about it: no activity, hobby, or task you do involves holding your shoulders back.

Tennis or pickleball player? You can't hit the ball if you’re pulling your shoulders back.🎾

Ever hit a golf ball? The first lesson is always, "Let your arms hang."⛳

Chopping vegetables for dinner?  Not happening with your shoulder back!🥕

In fact, holding your shoulders back for posture can just make things worse. You end up leaning back and compressing your spine, which can cause many problems as you age.

So, stop holding your shoulders back!

Instead, train them to stay back naturally and watch your posture improve.

How do you do that?

It’s simpler than you might think.
